tiny bets no. 11 ~ the wormhole
“A wormhole is like a tunnel between two distant points in our universe that cuts the travel time from one point to the other.”
“A wormhole is like a tunnel between two distant points in our universe that cuts the travel time from one point to the other.”
I’ve said this to at least 5 people in the past month or two — Q4 feels like I’m entering the wormhole of the year. One second October is starting, and the next… *poof* I’m spit out and it’s 2024.
The irony of me writing this post is I started it on October 5th and now…
*wormhole intensifies*
So we’re here at the end of the year. December has flown by and it’s been weird. Like, twilight zone weird.
I’ve lived a million different lives when it comes to figuring out how to “December” in a way that feels good, and I’m sure you have too. This time of year has a lot of expectations wrapped up in it and stress lurks around in the dark corridors even if we’re keeping it fairly low-key.
It’s normal to feel tired of all the expectations around the end of the year. Even our own.
The general vibe we’re expected to set 500 goals for the new year, revisit our 5 year plan*, throw out old bad habits, be productive, see everyone under the sun (including traveling during the busiest season of the year) all while making promises to ourselves of the completely new person we want to be in the new year.
I dunno about youuu, but yah. I got tired just writing that. Unsubscribe please.
It’s ok to actually enjoy your holiday and have down time with no productivity. You can even have some real big “get off my IRL lawn” energy and unplug from people and things, which is my fave as of right now. All I wanted to do this December was celebrate my birthday, roll right into the holiday season in peace, hang out in sweats drinking coffee, and catch up on some movies/books.
Did it turn out that way? Not exactly. 90% there. But like i said, it’s been weird af. 🙃
As we’re reaching the end of the wormhole, here are some things to consider while closing out 2023 and moving into the new year, even though it’s easier said than done sometimes.
Here’s your permission slip if you need one:
➡️ If it doesn’t light you up, let it go and don’t cram it into the EOY or start of the year madness.
➡️ If you don’t have to travel, don’t. Consider off-peak times to save time, money aaaaand sanity.
➡️ Just because someone has a million step method to CRUSHING (😭) 2024, doesn’t mean you have to follow it. Slow and steady, one tiny bet at a time.
➡️ Sometimes just figuring out what you want more off, and less of, is enough.
➡️ Take a few days or even just hours to yourself, unplugged.
➡️ If the holiday season isn’t a happy time for you, it’s ok to feel the feels.
➡️ Whatever your version of “end of year-ing” is, remember that you can always work towards better habits and goals *anytime* you want to start.
You don’t have to wait until a new year to work on yourself bb. Every day is a new day when the clock strikes midnight. Don’t let the pressure of Jan 1, 2024 get you.
Wishing you the very best new year, however you plan on celebrating!
See you in 2024 on the other side of the wormhole,
Sel
*I actually don’t have one of these… not because I’m flying by the seat of my pants or an underachiever, but because the usual ‘5 year plan’ is too rigid and it can blind you of interesting opportunities.
